This day hike starts off after a quick 30 minute drive from Shangri-la Old Town in the village of Ra. The road allows access to the trail head at the narrowing of the valley behind the village. From here, we follow a few logging trails and then a few yak trails. All along, we pass through multiple pastures and alongside multiple wooden herder huts.
The great thing about this trail is that there is often opportunity to greet the local herders who reside in these mountains with their yaks for the summer months. In all likelihood, we will be able to stay for yak butter tea that is done properly; over an open-fire. It’s also possible that the drying yak cheese placed over the fire will be shared around.
Once up to around 4000m in altitude, the trees thin out and we’ll pass by some patches of rhododendron forests and over patches of snow tea growing on the ground. At the mountain pass of 4200m, we’re able to get a view of Shudu lake in Pudacuo National park and of many of the surrounding peaks if it’s a clear day.
Inclusions: transportation, guide, and trail lunch.
