Nizu (also spelled Niru) has a lot to offer and it’s hard to take it all in. However, this trip makes the best attempt possible. First, we enjoy the drive from Shangri-la to Nizu that passes by Pudacuo national park, over a 3900 m (12,800 ft) mountain pass, and down the winding road through Tibetan and Yi villages down to Luoji Township. From there, the road continues up a secluded valley and passes by villages of many different minorities and eventually into the Tibetan village of Nizu.
After the 3 hour drive, we get right into it by starting our hike from Nizu village at 2,900 m of altitude (9500 ft). We then hike through the Nizu river canyon viewing the soaring cliffs on both sides and taking in the impressive power of the river as it flows through an almost cave-like canyon. This part of the hike ends at the Qicai waterfalls, a waterfall whose source comes straight out of the ground 200m up the mountain and then spreads over a calcite deposit that has created a 300m wide plateau and spreads the water evenly over this whole length.
After some time at the waterfalls, we return back to Nizu village and set up at a local lodge for some good home-cooked Tibetan food and an evening watching the sunset over Nizu village.
On the second day, we have a steep, challenging, but rewarding hike ahead of us. Starting our hike from Nizu village at 2,900 m of altitude (9500 ft). We then hike up to Selie pasture at 4,000m (13,100 ft) and prepare camp near Selie lake. It’s recommended, to lighten the load, all of the gear and food can be loaded on mules to be carried up to the campsite. After we arrive and set up camp, we will cook dinner over a fire inside a Tibetan style herder’s cabin.
If we arrive early enough, we can take the afternoon to take an extra 2-3 hour hike out and around Nanbao Lake and return to our campsite at Selie pasture.
On the third day, we hike back down to Nizu village, partly on some trail we haven’t yet covered, takes most of the morning and into early afternoon. Then we drive back through the secluded Nizu valley into Luoji township for a late afternoon hot meal. Finally, arriving back to Shangri-la in the evening weary travelers can enjoy a hot shower at their lodge of choice.
