One of our only half-day tours, is really almost a full day at about 6 hours.
Simple and straightforward, a splendid way to enjoy Shangri-la’s immediate surroundings. Napa Lake is high on many traveler’s list of places to see. A circuit around the lake covers a distance of 40+ kilometers and if you’ve just arrived and need a day to acclimatize to the altitude, a great way to get out and about is by open air jeep. The route takes you through Tibetan villages and wetlands where yaks and horses roam freely, grazing while cooling themselves all the while in the refreshing Napa lake waters. In the winter, the water recedes, but the migratory bird population escalates exponentially. In those months, you can see birds that have come from all over the Tibetan plateau to spend the winter months in a relatively mild and unfreezing body of water.
We will depart around noon and stop at one of the stalls around the lake for lunch.
Later in the afternoon we will continue around to the east side of the city for about 20km into Ringha valley and stop for a home visit with a local Tibetan family. This is a great opportunity to see the beautiful residential architecture and to try authentic local food. A simple, but nourishing Tibetan meal absolutely includes yak butter tea and usually Tibetan flat bread, cheese, and Tsampa (roasted barley flour).
After visiting the family, we will continue down the Ringha valley to the Dabao monastery. Though smaller, it is an amazing monastery to visit for a more authentic feel than the bigger Sumtsaling monastery.
Trip option: depart in the morning around 9:00 AM and first take the cable car up Shika Snow mountain on the way out to Napa Lake. Additional cost of 220/person for the entrance fee payable at the entrance to Shika mountain.
